Brooklyn Bodega founder and Executive Director, Wes Jackson spoke with BrooklynDowntownStar.com about the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival and future plans for the organization.
“[The BHF] is a celebration of the borough of Brooklyn, as well as Hip-Hop music and culture,” Jackson said. “It is a world-class festival in the spirit of the New Orleans Jazz Festival where we can celebrate and perpetuate progressive aspects of the music.”
Brooklyn Bodega announced this week that Q-Tip & Friends will headline the 7th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. And while the BHF is the organization’s most high-profile arm, the Bodega umbrella also includes BrooklynBodega.com, #BodegaRadio (on PNCRadio.fm), digital record label Savannah Boogie Music & Song and the recently launched Bodega Agency (which is focused on external marketing and promotions). Jackson also plans to open a restaurant in Brooklyn’s Dekalb Market in conjunction with this year’s festival’s July 11th kick off, bringing Brooklyn Bodega from an online destination into a physical locale.
“We’re looking to bring back that energy of music retail…we want more of an anchor, a place to congregate,” he said.
Wes Jackson has over 15 years experience as an entrepreneur and innovator in the music business. His career began producing concerts for Nas, The Roots, The Dave Matthews Band and De La Soul. He then went on to start his own promotions company, Seven Heads Promotions. Seven Heads was instrumental in launching the careers of Mos Def, Talib Kweli and others.
Under Jackson’s leadership Seven Heads then expanded into a record label and management company. The promotions company was then spun into The Room Service Group (RSG), one of the leaders in digital marketing. RSG has worked with Def Jam, Capitol, Warner Bros., Interscope, Vivendi, Converse and more.
In addition to his successful business ventures Wes also serves as a lecturer at the City University of New York (CUNY) and has consulted for Jazz At Lincoln Center and VH1 Hip-Hop Honors.
Jackson’s entrepreneurial spirit endures as he continues to grow the BHF into a world class event. Tickets are now available for the 7th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival featuring Q-Tip & Friends.
